An architectural space-suit performs several functions to allow its occupant to live safely and comfortably, inside or outside a space. It’s the combination of complex equipment, designed to keep the inhabitant comfortable, integrating multiple layers of environmental control and communication systems, all employed to allow complete freedom of movement and interaction.
We call those spatial and human hybridizations INHABITATS.

JOIN POC21 INNOVATION CAMP IN A FRENCH CASTLE AT 50 KM FROM PARIS
POC21 is an innovation camp for open source sustainability in 2015. 100+ makers, designers, engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and geeks join forces to prototype the collaborative, circular economy. During five weeks of co-living and co-making in the stunning french castle of Millemont they´ll build the tools we need for the world we want.
The recent interest in adaptive, actuating materials and structures is driven by the search for responsive systems forming a new paradigm in Architecture.
A closer link between architecture and the environment, both as an ecologic and as a social ecosystem, drives new behaviors of buildings like described in G.J Ballard novel « vermillion sands », where the building responds to the users and new tenants, and has a behavior of its own.
What enables us to make these new types of architecture are abilities to actuate soft materials which can be designed to show stimuli-sensing, multi-length scale actuation, tunable transport, programmed shape control and multifunctional orthogonal responses in architecture.
During the workshop, we will detail strategies of design that react to different environmental conditions, or changes in programmatic functions in order to elicit a precise dimensional and controlled response.
Material and fabrication research extended the possibilities of designing structures presenting cognitive abilities, integrating behavioral capabilities into architectural components with the ability to alter its configuration, form or properties in response to changes in the environment and social-spatial interaction.
We will explore the various advances in the emerging field of material responsive strategies for architecture with a focus on the various parameters that can be modulated to control a complex system behavior. We will look into biological systems, networks, smart adaptive material systems, specific responses to environment and co-evolution.
We will start with exploring responsive systems, through generative design experimentation, using digital tools to capture and simulate behaviors.
We will then translate this research into material investigations, working with adaptive and responsive materials that will form a full 1:1 fabricated installation showing our ways to respond to the environment, physically computing environmental data and human interaction.

The daily timetable is: Morning 10-13 + Afternoon 14-18 (coffee breaks included).
Open to architects, designers, engineers and artists with no previous knowledge of advanced 3d modeling. A basic knowledge of CAD modeling is required.

MEET THE TEAM .
Computational designer, co-founder of VOLUMES and director of the new Advanced Master Program in Computational Design and Making with École Narionale des Ponts et Chaussée. Francesco Cingolani teaches computational design and parametric architecture in different design and architecture schools and digital arts institutions. He strives to push forward the idea of design as a process without boundaries, merging art, social sciences and collaborative cultures.
Aldo is an architect and researcher. Master in Architectonic Design in 2007, Master in Advanced Architecture at IAAC [Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalunya] in 2012, Fab Academy diploma in 2014 in the Fab Lab Barcelona, Aldo is an expert in computational design and digital fabrication. He is the president of Fab Lab Frosinone. Since 2011, he is the manager of Noumena.
Manja van de Worp is a trained Architect and Structural Engineer and she completed a postgraduate in Emergent Technologies and Design at the AA in 2007. She has worked for Arup in London in the Advanced Geometry Unit and at the Advanced Technology and Research group in ARUP , designing structures with a complex geometry and moveable structures. Manja has Launched NOUS engineering LONDON in 2013 an engineering consultancy bearing extensive knowledge of advanced structural analysis tools, complex structural systems, materials and fabrication technologies.
Establisher and tutor of the rese arch GRASSHOPPER® Sessions (grasshopper.rese-arch.org). Expert in creative programming and form making in Java / Processing and Grasshopper®. Maker of the Boid flocking library for Grasshopper® (2014). Teaching creative programming at universities in SK, CZ, IT and independently in AT, SK, CZ, PL, RS. Conducting independent research on the theory of digital architecture (genetic algorithms, generative design, design by behavior, augmented reality), lecturing and publishing at universities and independent events. Creator and curator of Asking Architecture (2012) - Slovak and Czech national pavilion at 13th architecture exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia.
Architect, designer and Grasshopper user ,co-author of the projektowanieparametryczne.pl (the first polish website about parametric tools in architectural design). Author of the Starling, Squid, Anemone and Mesh Tools plugins for Grasshopper and many more disassociated scripts scattered all over the Grasshopper community. Founder of the Milkbox group, long time workshop tutor, teacher and a parametric design popularizer.
Domenico Di Siena is an architect, urban planner and researcher; is founder and director of Urbano Humano Agency, Agency for Innovation and Knowledge Society. His professional activity focuses on Research and Transformation projects related to Urban Innovation, Social Design, Network Thinking and Knowledge Management.
Chirag is an architect with expertise in digital fabrication and computational design. After completing architecture from CEPT, India, he furthered his interest through researching and developing interdisciplinary skills of architectural and parametric design at Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) in Spain, followed by expertise in digital tools and digital fabrication by graduating Fab Academy (Course by MIT’s Center For Bits and Atoms) from Fab Lab Barcelona.
Mikhael works as fab manager at VOLUMES coworking and he designed almost all the furniture you'll see in the coworking. He studied architecture but he is interested in graphic design, communication and collaborative culture. If you need to 3d-print an object, lasercut a drawing, design something or just need a talk in front of a warm coffee, Mikhael will probably be there 🙂
MassimilianoDibitonto is a phD in Computer Science, a research fellow at Link Campus University in ￼Rome and a lecturer at Rome University of Fine Arts. His main research interests are in Human ￼Computer Interaction and especially Natural Interaction paradigms. He is also an User Experience designer and an expert of physical computing and open source electronics. He is the cofounder of Madsign, a company that has it main focus on the design and the creation of Smart Objects and new user experience based on novel interaction paradigms and technologies.
500 sqm for designers, makers and creatives
VOLUMES coworking is a new collaborative space founded in Paris by a community of transdisciplinary designers, located in the picturesque Mouzaia quarter, next to the romantic park Buttes Chaumont.
With its 500 sqm, the space includes a coworking space, an artistic residency, a courtyard, a collaborative foodlab with a kitchen and a maker space equipped with a CNC, a lasercut and a 3d printer.
The community is mainly composed by creatives in general : architects, designers, innovators, makers, entrepreneurs, startups, cookers, artists, coders and slashers.
École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées launches for 2016 a new Advanced Master Program in Computational Design and Making. The program is directed by Francesco Cingolani and realised in partnership with La Gaîté Lyrique, Paris College of Arts, VOLUMES coworking and other parties.
Noumena is a collective group focused on design, research and education based in Italy and Spain. Noumena is investigating between the boundaries of new digital paradigms and design strategies applied to architecture, robotics and fabrication through an hands-on and experimental approach.
